BRABANTS DAGBLAD: RESTORATION OF THE FRAMES AND PAINTINGS OF KING WILLEM III AND MARY STUART (ZALTBOMMEL)

Boselie van Boekel was commissioned by the Municipality of Zaltbommel to assess and restore two paintings and the accompanying frames depicting Willem III of the Netherlands and Queen Mary II (Mary Stuart) of England. On completion of the assessment, we carefully described the condition of the paintings and listed the repairs needed for the frames. The two canvases had been restored at some time in the past. That work included varnishing them with rosin. Boselie van Boekel cleaned the paintings. This involved removing the yellowed varnish and correcting some of the old restoration work. After this, the paintings were given a new coat of varnish. The work on the frames mainly involved restoring the wooden structure. The joints were strengthened and missing ornaments were carved and added. A complete surface clean-up was also part of the work. Both frames were also treated against woodworm.

RTL4 LEKKER LEVEN – EIGEN HUIS & TUIN.

We see artisanal products all around us. But where, why and by whom are these products actually made? RTL4 asked us to collaborate on an item about traditional crafts in order to answer these questions. We are truly passionate about our profession, so answering that question required hardly any thought. Watch the episode below for an intimate behind-the-scenes look at the art of frame making at Boselie van Boekel in 's-Hertogenbosch. You'll also enjoy the delicious recipe presented by Hugo Kennis and Froukje de Both's lively and friendly personality.

Picture Framing Magazine (july 2021)

At Boselie van Boekel, we make our gesso from water, chalk and hare glue. It is the foundation and primer for many further layers in the intriguing process of traditional frame making, which we still use today. Frame makers all over the world use gesso as one of the first coats on their frames. By and large, the ingredients are much the same, but there are many variations on the theme depending on the country, region and individual frame maker. Each frame maker has his or her own recipe, technique and method. Barrie Lynn Bryant (www.merglennstudios.com) wrote a piece on this particular part of the frame making process for Picture Framing Magazine, www.pictureframingmagazine.net. We at Boselie van Boekel felt honoured when he asked us to talk about our views, recipe and experiences and explain aspects of our process.

COLLECT (02-04-19) - THE SECRETS OF FRAME RESTORATION

In 1954, French writer and musician Boris Vian suggested that: "An object only really becomes a work of art after it has been framed". Although this sounds odd initially, there is an element of truth to this statement. Just as ‘clothes make the man’, the frame makes the work of art. Our museums are full of truly precious and valuable frames, which, like the paintings they hold, could use some refurbishment after a few decades. The paintings obviously go to a painting restorer, but the frames are entrusted to a professional frame restorer. Only a handful of skilled professionals still practice and teach this ancient craft today. COLLECT visited them.

Chateau Meiland - THE MEILAND FAMILY VISITED OUR ATELIER RECENTLY.

Their family portrait, painted by Adriaan Rooymans, was unveiled for the first time at our shop. The film crew skilfully captured every detail of this special occasion. View the episode featuring our shop below.

Brabant Business - BOSELIE VAN BOEKEL RESTORES THE GREAT HALL IN ZWANENBROEDERSHUIS IN S’-HERTOGENBOSCH

BOSELIE van BOEKEL is restoring the paintwork of 24 family coats of arms, some of which are also gilded. The beams with their red and blue accents and imitation wood structure (faux bois) and the oak leaf ornaments around the ceiling are also being cleaned, repaired and preserved. The paintwork, gilded decorations and the three-dimensional ‘Zwanenbroeders’ coat of arms above the fireplace will be cleaned to remove smoke deposits and restored as necessary.

Brabeau (winter 2018) - SANDER VAN BOEKEL, FRAME MAKER EXTRAODINAIRE

He used to work as a chef and restored furniture and boats in his spare time. Curious to find out more, he paid a visit to Boselie, the renowned framer and restorer in s-Hertogenbosch, twelve years ago. They were looking for someone there, he had heard. Now Sander van Boekel runs the business that he took over from his predecessor and teacher. Very successfully, as it happens. And with creativity, love and great enjoyment. A portrait of an extraordinarily accomplished craftsman.
